(IAAC) IC 2149 - 17.5" F/4.5

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Object: IC 2149 (PK 166+10.1; PN G166.1+10.4; ARO 23)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: AUR
Object data: Vmag=10.7; Bmag=11.2; 15"x10"; type IIIb+II; central star of
Vmag=10.2; discovered by Fleming in 1906; ELCAT: [OIII, 496+501nm] = 8 x
[Hbeta, 486nm].
RA/DE: 05h56.39m, +46°06.2' (2000)
Date and UT of observation: 28 December 1997, 19h20 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.31 with averted vision 5% of the time
(glimpsed)
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 3 (stellar stars until 180x)
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 445mm/17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 211-400x
Filters used: UHC, OIII, Hbeta, polarized filter

Description: small to medium sized PN at 400x with OIII, oval and bright
with with fuzzy edges; brighter center and central star hard to detach from
overall nebulosity; estimated to be about 27"x14" along a WNW-ESE axis; UHC
gives a good contrast gain, OIII a very good one, and [not surprisingly
according to ELCAT data] Hbeta doesn't degrade and maybe give a little more
contrasty nebula; bluish at faint poxers; the polarizing filter gave no
changes on the nebula.

I can provide a scanned drawing of IC 2149 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works quite often with other
configurations...
