(IAAC) IC 2149 - 17.5" F/4.5

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Object: IC 2165 (PK 221-12.1; PN G221.3-12.3; ARO 62)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: CMa
Object data: Vmag=10.6; Bmag=12.9; 9"x7"; type IIIb; central star of
Vmag=14.99:; discovered by Fleming in 1898; ELCAT: [OIII, 496+501nm] = 16 x
[Hbeta, 486nm].
RA/DE: 06h21.71m, -12°59.23' (2000.0)
Date and UT of observation: 28 December 1997, 00h10 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.31 with averted vision 5% of the time
(glimpsed)
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 3 (stellar stars until 180x)
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 445mm/17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 211-400x
Filters used: UHC, OIII, Hbeta

Description: small to medium sized PN at 211x with OIII, round with quite
sharp edges, bright nebula; slightly brighter center, estimated to be about
13" in diameter (on drawing); blue hue best visible at 125x; both UHC and
OIII filters give a very good contrast gain, and Hbeta is not performing.

I can provide a scanned drawing of IC 2165 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works quite often with other
configurations...
