Personal "rating": B+
A remarkable object at this aperture in darker than usual
skies for my site. Looks much like the Ring Nebula in smaller
aperture, but a bit more symettrically round, but unlike the Ring (m57)
it's not as bright, not as fat, and not as much central nebulosity....
also.. it's faint central star stands out much more in NGC1501, dominating
the ringlike planetary when it does appear, especially with averted vision.
I don't think this object would be as enjoyable in smaller than 12" aperture
whereby the central star may not appear, as it seems approximately mag. 14.8
or so.
