Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Object: NGC 6842 (PK 065+00.1; PN G065.9+00.5; ARO 106, He 2-451, Sh 2-95)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: VUL
Object data: Vmag=13.1; Bmag=13.6; diam.=50" (67" in IDB); type IIIb;
central star of Vmag=15.98 (sp.06fp); discovered by Marth about 1850;
ELCAT: [OIII, 496+501nm] = 13 x [Hbeta, 486nm].
RA/DE: 19h55.01m, +29°17.0' (2000.0)
Date and UT of observation: 22 August 1998, 01h50 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual with averted vision in UMi): 6.31 (30% of the time)
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 2 (pinpoint stars until 400x)
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 445mm/17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 72-400x
Filters used: UHC, OIII, Hbeta

Description: at 400x, large PN, round, still faint and homogeneous with
ill-defined borders; about 66" in diameter (estimated on drawing) with a
very faint central star of at least mag16 (the limit for my scope
superimposed on a nebular background); UHC gives a slight contrast gain,
OIII a good one and Hbeta is of no use; a mag15 star appears against the S
edge.

I can provide a scanned drawing of NGC 6842 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(yann.pothier@fnac.net), it works quite often with other configurations...
