(IAAC) M 27 (NGC 6853) - 8" F/10

Object: NGC 6853 (PK 060-03.1; PN G060.8-03.6; ARO 14, He 2-452)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: VUL
Object data: Vmag=7.4; Bmag=7.6; diam.=>348" (480"x350" in IDB with outer
halo of 830"); type III+II; central star of Vmag=13.8 (with V=17.0
companion at 6"S); discovered by Messier in 1764; ELCAT: [OIII, 496+501nm]
= 14 x [Hbeta, 486nm] (note an oustanding [OII] flux at 372nm but maybe too
blue for human vision?].
RA/DE: 19h59.56m, +22°43.3' (2000.0)
Date and UT of observation: 20 July 1993, 23h45 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual with averted vision in UMi): 6.0
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1.5
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 4
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Meade SCT 8"/203mm f/10
Magnification: 145x
Filters used: UHC, OIII
Description: at 145x, very large PN, extremely bright and hazy; hourglass
shape of about 6' lenght, strangled until 2' with its major axis NE-SW; the
major axis of the faint ansae is about 7' (dimensions based on
drawing)along a NW-SE axis; the mag13.5 central star is just visible; the
SW part of the dumbbell is brighter; numerous stars are seen around and on
the nebula: the latter beeing (from the central star) one of mag14 at 1.8'N
(and very slightly W) and another of mag14 at 3.2'NW.
I can provide a scanned drawing of M27 to anyone who can read the binhex
encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try (yann.pothier@fnac.net),
it works quite often with other configurations...
