(IAAC) NGC 6857 - 8" F/10

Category: HII region (often mistaken for a planetary nebula)
Constellation: CYG
Object data: Vmag=14.0:; Bmag=14.4:; diam.=40" (4'x3' for Sharpless data);
type HII region; exciting star of Vmag=14: (Bmag=14.3) excentered towards
the NW; discovered by W. Herschel; no ELCAT data.
RA/DE: 20h01.9m, +33°31' (2000.0)
Date and UT of observation: 22 July 1993, 01h30 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual with averted vision in UMi): 6.3
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 2
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Meade SCT 8"/203mm  f/10
Magnification: 145x
Filters used: UHC, OIII

Description: at 145x, medium sized PN, very faint; better seen with OIII or
UHC filter with no real preference; a little brighter towards the center;
about 40" in diameter (on drawing); a mag14 star is decentered to the NW,
near the border; mag13 star 12" from the W border; a mag10.5 star is 6'ENE.

binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
