(IAAC) NGC 6881 - 17.5" F/4.5

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Object: NGC 6881 (PK 074+02.1; PN G074.5+02.1; ARO 108, He 2-456)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: CYG
Object data: Vmag=13.9; Bmag=14.3; diam.=4" (30"x5" in IDB); type IIa+III
(quadrupolar in IDB); central star of Vmag=?; discovered by Pickering in
1881; ELCAT: [OIII, 496+501nm] = 23 x [Hbeta, 486nm].
RA/DE: 20h10.84m, +37°25.0' (2000.0)
Date and UT of observation: 24 August 1998, 01h55 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual with averted vision in UMi): 6.31 (30% of the time)
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 3 (pinpoint stars until 211x)
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 445mm/17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 72-400x
Filters used: UHC, OIII, Hbeta

Description: at 400x and OIII, stellar PN (but less then the other stars of
same brightness at this combination of power and filter), sharp edges, very
faint, brighter center; UHC gives a good contrast gain, OIII a very good
one [see the outstanding OIII/Hbeta ratio) and Hbeta is of no use; a couple
of stars at 4'NNW shows one red [GSC2683485, V=10.27] and one white
[SAO69557, V=8.49].

I can provide a scanned drawing of NGC 6881 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(yann.pothier@fnac.net), it works quite often with other configurations...
