(IAAC) Obj: VV 711 (MCG+05-43-013, CGCG 172-18, PGC 61660), IC 1278 (Bigourdan 221) - Inst: 20" f/5 dobson

[Editor's Note: A SIMBAD query based on position clearly identifies
the object VV711 to be synonomous with 'MCG+05-43-013', as Wolfgang
indicates. However, I couldn't find a citation in online literature
which would confirm that identification for me. -Lew Gramer]

Description:
Barbara Wilson asked:
>Does anyone have a successful observation of VV711 in Hercules? It is an
>interacting multi galaxy system in Hercules. I was unsuccessful with this
>one in my 20 inch last weekend under admittedly hazy summer skies.
--
I observed VV 711 in May with my new 20" Dobson f/5 from an altitude 1250 m.
It was a very clear night (fst 6.5mag, zenit). My primary target was the pair
NGC 6575 / IC 1277 in Hercules. Looking for the NGC/IC project, I studied the
appearence of IC 1278 (Bigourdan 221), which is a compact group of 4 stars 3'
NW of NGC 6575.
--
It was then that I logged VV 711, which is 2o SE. Prior to the observation
I noted: VV 711 = MCG 5-43-13 = CGCG 172-18 = PGC 61660; 15.2 mag (Zwicky);
14.4mag (Guide, non-star); 'pair of coalescents' (VV, his published image
is rotated by 180o), separation 12".
N component: 181602.1 +284228, 35"x15", S + large streamer NE
S component: 181602.1 +284216 (NPM1G +28.0442), 15"x15", E + streamer S,
B=16.74 (NPM1G mag is only for the stellar core).
--
Here is my own observation:
At 350x: oval, diffuse, total around V=15.7mag.
At 500x: separated N-S, components around V=16.0 mag.
