Description:
The last time I tried to locate the Intergalactic Wanderer, NGC
2419 (a GC), I couldn't find it. After some discussions in the
Astromart Forums, I decided to give my 4" TV-102 refractor another
shot even though I could hardly see the stars in Lynx. I couldn't
see it at 22x or 30x. But at 60x, it can be detected (especially
with averted vision), large but extremely dim smudge. 110x gave
a pretty similar view. The GC is easier to see at 146x (brighter
with averted vision), but still an extremely dim smudge. Best
view. Round, especially averted. A chain of 3 stars led me to
the GC: mag 9.3 GSC 2958:870, mag 7.9 SAO 60229 and mag 7.2 SAO 60232,
with the GC near SAO 60232. 176x and 220x only made the GC dimmer.
This is the dimmest of the dim GC I've looked at through the TV-102!
Much dimmer than its mag 10.4 and absolutely no stars resolved! I
found this sketch on the web and what I saw was probably 1/2 as
bright with no graininess whatsoever.
