Description:
This was an “exercise” from Walter Scott Houston's book the Deep Sky Wonders.
NGC 3414 - Couldn’t be seen at 22x. Blinked in and out at 44x. Much better at
73x, stellar core very dim, barely perceptible nebulosity. The galaxy lies at
a midpoint between two white stars (with a tinge of yellow): SAO 81542 and SAO
81561. Looks elongated. Dimmer at 110x.
NGC 3504 – Couldn’t be seen at 22x. A dim, gray patch at 44x, blinking in and
out. Better view at 73x but still extremely dim. Core is blinking in and
out. Can’t detect a definite shape. Formed a triangle with two yellowish
stars: SAO 81635 and SAO 81653.
NGC 3486 – Couldn’t be seen at 22x. Can just barely detect at 44x, very dim,
dimmest of the three galaxies. Slightly better view at 73x, no shape detected,
no core detected. Forms a triangle with two white stars (with slight yellow
tinge): SAO 81642 and SAO 81621.
Incredulously, Houston could use 400x with his 4-inch Clark refractor stopped
down to 3-inch!
