Instrument: 17.5" f/5 Newtonian
Magnification: 159, 212
Filter(s): none
Object(s): NGC5981, NGC5982, NGC5985
Category: Group of galaxies.
Class:
Constellation: Draco
Data: mag 11.9-13.9 size
Position: RA 15:38 DEC 59:21
Description:
First observation of this trio with the 17.5" scope and partial tracking (Alt
motor and belt not functioning well). Unfortunately the skies in Mount
Forrest (home of Starfest) are starting to suffer from light pollution on the
horizons - couple this with the aurora tonight and I had less than ideal
conditions for this observation.
NGC5982: is telescopically the brighter of the three; slightly elongated
E-W; faint outer region which very suddenly brightens in the middle.
NGC5985: is the largest and second brightest; evenly illuminated with a
small nucleus on averted vision.
NGC5981: is the faintest requiring averted vision most of the time; long
streak with no detail; slightly shorter than NGC5982.
