Description:
At 100x (20mm Ultrascopic, 31' TFOV), NGC 743 was a pleasant surprise. This is
a prominent, triangle shaped cluster about 8' on a side and includes 20 stars
ranging from quite to the edge of resolution. The east leg of the triangle
has a bright star at each end with 2 dimmer between - all in a dead straight
line. (Later closer inspection of the charted location indicates that these
4 stars are not part of the cluster.) The other two legs are also composed of
nearly stright lines of 4 to 5 stars. The brightest remaining stars are
concentrated in the southern part of the cluster. Quite lovely. NGC 743 stands
out very well from the field in the 40mm EP (Optiluxe, 51x, 1.2d TFOV).
