Date/time of observation: 03/03/03 03:50 UT
Location of site: Rolla, MO (Lat 37 57'N, Elev )
Site classification: Rural
Sky darkness: <Limiting magnitude>
Seeing: 7 <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)>
Moon presence: None - moon not in sky
Instrument: 10" f/4.5 Dobsonian
Magnification: 36x, 68x, 72x, 136x
Filter(s): None
Object(s): NGC 3729
Category: External galaxy.
Class:
Constellation: UMa
Data: mag 11.4p size 3.1' X 2.1'
Position: RA 11:34 DEC +53:08
Description:
Elliptical with slight elongation NW-SE. A faint object with slight
brightening toward core. There is a faint field star just off the SW edge
of the halo. Located with averted vision at 68x. Does not bear magnification
well. Begins to fade into the background at higher powers. Best seen at
68x-72x.

Located approx. 20' from NGC 3729 is the galaxy NGC 3718. Although having a
listed magnitude of 10.5p, it is fairly large (8.7' X 4.5') and is quite faint.
Uranometria 2000 lists a surface brightness of 14.4 as compared to the surface
brightness of NGC 3729 which is listed at 13.1. Sweeping across the plotted
position for NGC 3718, during moments of steady seeing, with medium power and
averted vision, a ghostly oval would appear. As soon as the movement stopped,
it would vanish.
