Description:
At 120x (15mm Panoptic, 34' true field), OC NGC 6546 appeared very large and
only slightly concentrated. About two dozen 12th to 13th magnitude stars are
scattered over a 16'x10' SSW/NNE area. Two roughly parallel of 5 to 6 stars,
each about 8' long, run in the same orientation separated by 4'. Another two
dozen fainter stars, to the edge of resolution, are scattered around. Averted
vision picks up perhaps yet another two dozen. In all, at least 70 stars are
visible. This is a subtle but attractive galactic cluster.
NGC 6546 is located 1.3 degrees NNE of the Lagoon Nebula. It is about 2,700
light years distant (Sky Atlas 2000.0 Companion). That would put it half way or
more to the Lagoon and, I suppose, pretty much right between the Local Spiral
Arm and the Sagittarius Spiral Arm.
