Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Object: PK 017-21.1, Abell 65, PN G017.3-21.9, ARO 26, ESO 526-03,
Sh2-52, VV'513, IRAS 19435-2315
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: SGR
Object data: Vmag=13.2, PHmag=15.2, diam.104" (100" in IDB), type
IIa, central star UBV 16806 of Vmag=15.9 (sp. 0p k), uranometria
chart 341; discovered by Abell in 1966; expansion velocity=22km/s
(OIII); ELCAT: OIII [496+501nm] = 5 x Hbeta [486nm].
RA/DE: 19h46m33.7s, -23°08'12" (2000.0)
Date and UT of observation: 01 August 2003, 22h00 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.34 (50% of the observing time
with averted vision)
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 2
Altitude of object above horizon: 22°
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 445mm/17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 211x, 400x
Filters used: UHC, OIII, Hbeta

Description: at 211 & 400x with OIII filter, medium to large PN,
quite faint (seen 50% of the time with averted vision), oval NW-SE;
about 130"x80", homogeneous or very slightly brighter towards center;
"central" star of 14.5mag; the PN is stucked between two mag.13 stars
to the SE (against the border) and NW (just detached from edge); UHC
gives a good contrast gain, OIII a very good one and Hbeta is of no
use.

I can provide a scanned drawing of PK 017-21.1 (Abell 65) to anyone
who can read the binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to
try (yann.pothier@fnac.net), it works quite often with other
configurations...
