(IAAC) PK 085+04.1 (Abell 71) - 17.5" F/4.5

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Object: PK 085+04.1, Abell 71, PN G084.9+04.4, ARO 352, Sh 2-116, VV' 537
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: CYG
Object data: Vmag=14.0, Bmag=15.2, diam.157", type IIIb, central star
of Vmag=18.95, uranometria chart 85; discovered by Abell in 1955;
ELCAT: OIII [496+501nm] = 2.6 x Hbeta [486nm].
RA/DE: 20h32m23.1s, +47°21'03" (2000.0)
Date and UT of observation: 21 August 2001, 02h55 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.34 (50% of the observing time
with averted vision)
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 3
Altitude of object above horizon: 42°
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 445mm/17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 125, 211x
Filters used: UHC, OIII, Hbeta

Description: after an unsuccesful attempt with Uranometria atlas, I
finally succeeded with a more precise chart from (c)Guide7; at 125x &
OIII, medium sized to large PN, somewhat oval N-S, extremely faint,
seen about 10% of the observing time with averted vision, about 100"
in diameter (very rough estimate), homogeneous with ill-defined
edges; OIII filter gives a small contrast gain; the PN has 4 stars of
13th to 15th mag. inside.

I can provide a scanned drawing of PK 085+04.1 (Abell 71) to anyone
who can read the binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to
try (yann.pothier@fnac.net), it works quite often with other
configurations...
