Description:
NGC 1300:
Gx, 11,1mag, 6x4’, Eri. Very large and fairly faint galaxy with distinct bright
core at 78x. The central bar is slightly brighter and surrounded by a faint
halo. Very low surface brightness.At 244x the 2 spiral arms become obvious with
the southern arm brighter and more distinct. The core is very compact, bright
but not star-like. A faint foreground star is visible between the galaxies bar
and the southern arm. Difficult object that requires very clear skies.
NGC 1297:
Gx, 13mag, 2,5x2’, Eri. Just 20’ N of NGC 1300. Very close to a 12mag star. At
244x NGC1297 shows a slightly N-S elongated shape with a brighter large center.
The surface brightness of the outer region is higher than that of neighboring
1300. No mottling or detail. Nice pair with 1300 at 78x.
