Description:
254X-While slowly panning West from M42, I saw a small diffuse spot with direct
vision. Averted vision did not improve it very much, Initially I thought it was
a PNe because of a ring and centeral brightness, however it was completely
extinguished when using the O-III filter and the UHC filter did not make much
difference.
There appears to be an outer ring, a darker annulus just inside the bright ring
and the a broad diffuse center. A faint cloud seems to extend from the object
toward the N-W. (2 stars at 4-5 O'clock and a trio at 8-9 O'clock were recorded
on the sketch and later confirmed in CDS) This catalog research identified the
object as a SB(r) Galaxy and generally confirms my sketch and notes. It was a
good exploration.
