Observer: Brent Reary
Your skills: Intermediate (some years)
Date/time of observation: 01/04/06 01:35 UT
Location of site: Rolla, MO USA (Lat 37 57'N, Elev )
Site classification: Rural
Sky darkness: 7.1 <Limiting magnitude>
Seeing: <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)>
Moon presence: Minor - crescent or far from object
Instrument: 10.1" f/4.5 Newtonian reflector
Magnification: 77x, 128x, 257x
Filter(s): None
Object(s): NGC 877, NGC 870, NGC 871
Category: External galaxy.
Class:
Constellation: Ari
Data: mag size
Position: RA : DEC :
Description:
NGC877; Mag 11.9, Size 2.0'X 1.5', RA 02:18, DEC +14:33
A faint, uniform oval nebulous patch slightly elongated NW-SE. It shows no
detectable brightening toward the core. An 8th magnitude field star is located
5' SSE. The galaxy is located 10' E. of NGC870/NGC871. NGC876, plotted just
off the SW edge, could not be seen. Visible with averted vision at 77x, it
bore magnification well and was best seen at 257x.

NGC870; Mag ~13.5, Size: Nearly stellar, RA 02:17, DEC +14:31
NGC871; Mag 13.5, Size: Nearly stellar, RA 02:17, DEC +14:33
These two galaxies appeared as slightly out of focus stars at 128x and were
steadily held with averted vision. At 257x they appeared as tiny circular
halos with stellar cores. In spite of published magnitudes of 15-16 for
NGC870, both appeared of nearly equal brightness. While the Uranometria
2000.0 Deep Sky Field Guide (2nd edition) shows NGC871 to be elongated 1.2'
X 0.5' N-S, no trace of this structure could be seen. The galaxies are located
~5' NW of a 9th magnitude field star and 10' W. of NGC877.
