Observer: Armin Hermann
Your skills: Advanced (many years)
Date/time of observation: 13 Dec 2003
Location of site: Sangkhlaburi/Thailand (Lat +15, Elev 200m)
Site classification: Exurban
Sky darkness: 6 mag <Limiting magnitude>
Seeing: 8 <1-10 Seeing Scale (10 best)>
Moon presence: None - moon not in sky
Instrument: 15" f4,5 Obsession
Magnification: 78 - 244x
Filter(s): none
Object(s): NGC 494, NGC 496, NGC 499, NGC 504, NGC 507, NGC 508, IC 1689, IC 1687, IC 1680, IC 1682
Category: Group of galaxies.
Class:
Constellation: Psc
Data: mag various size various
Position: RA 01:25 DEC +33:
Description:
Brightest (at 12 mag) member of this group in Pis is NGC 507. This member is
fairly big and circular with a distinct core. Close to it is 14,1mag 508, easily visible
at 131x but with no detail. I did not try to identify all the members of the group
individually as there was so many (10+). The faintest member I could make out
with averted vision at 244x was IC 1680 (14,9mag) close to a 9,8mag star 15’ east
of 507. This member was almost stellar and much fainter than the elongated
IC1682 (14,3mag) west of it near another 9mag star. Best magnification to
observe the group is 244x. In general, galaxies of down to mag 14,5 were easy to
observe.
Other objects in this rich and concentrated cluster include NGC 494 & 495 (both
13mag), NGC 496 (13.4mag) NGC 499 (12.4mag), NGC 504 (13mag), IC 1689
(13.8mag), IC 1687 (13.7mag) and more.
Wandering around that group is sure very exciting.
