(meteorobs) comet Hale-Bopp

Feb.01,1997
Thanks to you, George, I saw comet H/B yesterday morning for the first
time!! It was so exciting to finally see it.

I observed from our home in Yucca Valley, CA (in the high desert near
Palm Springs) from 0533-0600 using information from you, and that of
SAbbott4U@aol.com, on Thurs. It really stimulated me to get out of my
warm bed and look, and I was richly rewarded for my efforts!! I could
see it naked eye very well, and using 8x56 binoculars I observed the
diffuse tail and bright coma. As I hadn't observed in the early AM for
a long time I had to reorient myself to that night sky. What a treat our
sky is for those who bother to look!

I'm hooked, so got up again this am, but like you was bothered by thin
clouds intermittantly obscuring my view. It did seem somewhat brighter
this am, but that's a pretty subjective statement. I was surprised by a
satellite traveling S-N through Ursa Minor. It has been not terribly
cold these mornings, so I can enjoy observing sans freezing for which
I'm grateful.

Thanks again, George and Steve for your helpful nudge!
