Please kindly postnews regarding asteroid impacts, Comet Hale-Bopp if any,
and effects of asteroid/comet possible impact on earth if the Discovery
documentary by York Films delve on this matter."

Hello Glenn,

Here's a bunch of comments for you regarding "Three Minutes To Impact"
which aired on the Discovery channel on Feb 9.

This is an excellent show and scientifically based. Even the sensational
computer simulations of disasters were designed to realistic scales to show
effects of various impacts.

The show put the earth in a historical time perspective wherein future
impacts are shown to be inevitable.

It explained comets and asteroids and dealt with how comets are speculated
to be dislodged from the Oort Cloud. It graphically displayed how asteroids
could be jostled and dislodged from the asteroid belt to become a threat to
earth.

It showed other planets like Mercury and how it is cratered by impacts. It
displayed effects of previous earth impacts and had great footage of Gene &
Caroline Shoemaker locating heretofore unknown impact craters in Australia.

It showed SL-9 and Jupiter.

It discussed the Chixalub crater and posible resulting species extinction.
It showed other possible submerged impact craters and magnetic anomalies.

It discussed Tunguska, and other probable recent impacts.

It showed effects of a tsunami on coast cities if the ocean was struck.

It showed a lot of fireball footage and gave rates of fireball events.

It pointed out that the search for earth crossing asteroids is in great
need of funding. It interviewed the handful doing active searches.

It discussed at length the possibility of deflecting an impactor if it is
known to be on a collision course with earth. It showed there is much
debate as to a method of planetary defense response.

It ended with the suggestion that it may be beneficial to put a human
colony of Adam and Eves on Mars so as to be able to "back-populate" the
Earth after the next devasting impact event.

It dealt with much more but this will give you a flavor of the show I hope.

So all in all I thought it was a fine piece of modern scientific
documentation that was factual with evidence and entertaining to
watch.---Tom Ashcraft
