(meteorobs) June 16 Observations-Not A Whole Lot of Excitement

-- [ From: Robert Lunsford * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] --

I observed for 6 hours from the Descanso Observatory this morning. I
only counted a total of 27 meteors mainly due to the fact a bright moon
was present during the first four hours. The Xi Draconids were a
disappointment as I only saw 4 possible members of this shower. Last
year at this time Marco Langbroek witnessed a brief outburst and I was
hoping to see a repeat, but nothing close to that occurred. The four
meteors I did plot came from a radiant located at 287 +54. Two other
candidates lined up with the radiant but the one that occurred near
Polaris was too short (3 degrees) and the other was too long and too
slow. Nothing whatsoever lined up with the June Lyrid radiant. Two
members of the Sagittarids were also seen coming from the south and
shooting overhead into my field of view. Perhaps the highlight of the
session was the last meteor seen. It was a rare 3rd magnitude Daylight
Arietid that produced a long streak (30 degrees) as it shot up from the
northeastern horizon. Overall, it was a disappointing session and could
have been the last session of the month unless the morning of the 30th
is clear.
