(meteorobs) Ottawa - Mars/meteorites talks

Greetings all,

The following is a forwarded message regarding several talks this week in
Ottawa, Canada on Mars and meteorites...

Those of you in eastern Ontario and western Quebec may be interested in
dropping by... Besides the interesting talks, Logan Hall houses Canada's
meteorite collection...

(Apologies for the local posting, but had no other way to reach some of you....)

> Dear Randall:	Here is an update on information, sent out earlier this
> month by Don Peterson for the benefit of RASC Ottawa members:
>
> This week the Meteorite and Impacts Advisory Committee (MIAC) of the
> Canadian Space Agency (CSA) meets in Ottawa. I am a member of that
> committee and its Chair, Public Awareness.
>
> The meetings commence with a Public Lecture on Thursday evening October 22
> at 7:30 p.m. in Camsell Hall, (enter via 580 Booth Street) by Dr. Charles
> (Chip) Shearer of the University of New Mexico Institute of Meteoritics.
> He will speak on "Life on Mars!?"; he has researched both lunar rocks and
> martian meteorites, including ALH84001 thought by some to contain ancient
> bacterial fossils. Dr. Shearer is on NASA committees to plan for
> planetary research over the next decade, that will result in robotic
> return of samples from Mars; Chip's research on planetary materials is
> supported by NASA grants.
>
> There will also be an in-house lecture again in Camsell Hall, as part of
> NRCan's National Science and Technology Week celebrations, on Friday
> October 23 at noon, by Chip, entitled "Exploring for Life on Mars" and he
> will be reporting to MIAC privately about future directions in planetary
> research on Friday evening. MIAC has its annual business meeting all day
> Saturday.
>
> Besides Chip's visit, there will be members of MIAC with their expertise,
> present at both lectures and for the annual meeting. This includes Peter
> Brown and Bob Hawkes who are actively working with CSA and the U.S.
> government etc. on the threat to satellites posed by the possible meteor
> storm Nov. 16-17 this year (the Leonids -- the subject of last year's
> Public Lecture). John Rucklidge will be there -- he obtained the
> meteorite that almost hit a golfer in Kitchener last July. The Kitchener
> meteorite and two other new Canadian meteorites are on display in Logan
> Hall at 601 Booth Street in the GSC building. I am hoping that after
> Chip's lecture on Thursday evening that Logan Hall will be open; I realise
> that this lecture coincides with the Orionids as well.
>
> Contact number for details about the Thursday lecture, parking etc. is
> 995-4261. There will be simultaneous translation provided.
>
> Please pass this on as appropriate.
>
> Thanks.
