Re: (meteorobs) Fw: Hge fireball june 13 1999

George,
It's not always that easy. In Australia a chap runs a $5/min 1900 number
to collect fireball and UFO reports. I've tried to get info from him, but
he requires payment and he is not able to sift the wheat from the chaf.
He is more likely to get reports to the press and they give him a free ad
by giving out his number! Unfortunately his statements display a profound
ignorance of fireballs, and on the occasion I tried to put some basic
points to him about the frequency of fireballs, impacts etc, I was told I
didn't know what I was talking about and should get better equipment if I
wans't getting a bright fireball every night! He claimed he got video
of fireballs sent to him every day. Whilst I can accept that some UFO
groups take the scientific investigation seriously, my own experience is
that most are less interested in scientific investigation and more in
conspiracies and alien contact.

I guess one could set up their own fireball/UFO hotline (if they had the
time and patience) and make a living out of it (the Australian chap claims
to make 12 times the average Australian wage, but then that statement came
with an offer to sell the service!). One could always just ignore the UFO
reports!

Cheers, Rob
