(meteorobs) July 19/20 Observations From California

Again I observed from the western foothills of the Laguna Mountains this
morning for 3 hours. The weather was even cooler than the previous night
but I was prepared this time as I packed warmer clothes. The activity
was pretty much the same as the previous night. There were a few
noticeable dead spots when 10-15 minutes would go by without any
activity. Otherwise the total may have been better than last nights. The
highlight of the night was a 50 degree long 2nd magnitude sporadic that
lasted 3 full seconds. It came low out of the southeast and shot through
Aquarius traveling toward the west. The first meteor of the night was
also impressive. It was a -1 yellow Perseid that shot through the
"Square" of Pegasus heading south leaving a 2 second train. Another
notable meteor occurred at 10:12 UT when a very quick sporadic meteor
shot eastward in the "Square" of Pegasus heading east. It was only 2
degrees long but of magnitude -1 and it left a 3 second bluish train.

The first column gives the period watched stated in Universal Time (UT)
which is PDT + 7 hours. The second column gives the percent of that
particular hour actually spent observing the sky. Time was lost for
plotting and data entry tonight. The third column gives the average
limiting magnitude estimated during each period with a minimum of 4
estimates using at least 2 different sky areas close to my center of
view. The last several columns list the activity seen during each
period.

I was facing east at an altitude of 70 degrees all night. No breaks were
taken during this session. ACG = Alpha Cygnids, ANT = Anthelion Radiant
or Sigma Capricornids, CAP = Alpha Capricornids, NDA = North Delta
Aquarids, PAU = Pisces Austrinids, PER = Perseids, SDA = South Delta
Aquarids, and SPO = Sporadic (random activity).
