(meteorobs) re: Watching For Fun

Count me in, Bob, where watching for fun is concerned.

I was once told, by one of our illustrious meteor-watchers,
that what I did - (my annual hobby of compiling Perseid observations,

puttin' 'em all together in a catalog full of tables and graphs and
a long narrative which quoted the oo's and ah's of observers, and
sending
it to those who sent me their observations) - was worthless and a
waste
of time. He couldn't seem to grasp the fact that I was doing it
'cause I
enjoyed it.

The only reason I watch meteors is for the fun of it. The poetry. The
subtle
whisperings of the grandness of the universe. I have written songs,
poetry
and articles inspired by the night sky.....the articles being
published
locally, the songs and poetry for my own well-being.

It is strictly for fun, and we all need more fun in our lives.

My wife and I travel around Ohio doing arts and crafts shows, always
"harassing"
folks about gettin' out and watchin' meteor showers (of course I
"harass" them
about bird watching, gardening, and wildflowers, too). I tell them a
little about limiting magnitudes and ZHRs, etc, but I tell them first
and foremost,
to have fun. Some folks from my mail list are even gonna get together
the
first weekend of August for Perseids and Prairie hikes in southern
Ohio.

.....oops......I've begun to drift...............sorry.........

Anyway...........life is short. Get out and watch those meteors. Take
a moment
to ponder the kindred spirits all around the world eager for a clear
night across
which the countless stars are spread like salt on a pretzel, each and
every one of
us hoping to catch a magnificent display of "falling stars". Don't
let all those
numbers and plots diminish the wonder and awe. Do it for the fun of
it.........
