Welcome to the list!!
I have seen meteors split in two as you mentioned (although note very
frequently), but I have never seen one do the "double helix" movement you
describe. Also, I do not recall anyone reporting that type of behavior in
the observations I have received, so I would say meteors like you describe
are not very common.
