(meteorobs) Meteor Activity Outlook May 19-25, 2000

The moon is now full and a bright beacon during the entire night. Meteor
observations are possible during this period if one has transparent
skies. The bright moonlight will hide all but the brighter meteors
causing hourly rates to be extremely low. Only during the last portion
of this period does a window of opportunity open for early evening
observing. The moon will rise later each night thus allowing an hour or
two of dark skies by Tuesday. Rates are still expected to be low during
this time. Observers at high northern latitudes have a long wait for the
end of evening twilight but the moon's path will be quite low so there
is also an opportunity for them. Observers south of the equator now
experience long nights with the moon high in their skies. This would be
a good week to catch up on those neglected projects whether they are
astro related or from that list your better half keeps reminding you
about.

I'll make a quick listing of potential targets for this week should any
diehards wish to watch. The positions listed are for Saturday
night/Sunday morning May 20/21:

Anthelion radiant: 16:54 (255) -23, on the Scorpius/Ophiuchus
                                    border northeast of Antares.
Beta Corona Australids: 19:22 (289) -39, southeast of Sagittarius.

Northern Apex: 22:09 (330) +04, on the Aquarius/Pegasus border
                                southeast of Enif (Epsilon Pegasi).
Southern Apex: 22:09 (330) -26, in Pisces Austrinus, northwest
                                of Fomalhaut.
Eta Aquarids: 23:28 (351) +05, in Pisces, on the northern edge of
                               the "Circlet"
Arietids: 02:08 (034) +14, only 25 degrees west of the sun, difficult
                           to see!

Clear Skies!
