Re: (meteorobs) Observing the Leonids from Florida

Hi Pete!
Good to hear from you again! It was interesting to hear of these Florida
"expeditions" and I'm curious about the availablity of dark skies in the
vicinity of the Kennedy Space Center -I would have thought there would be a
great deal of light pollution there.
I currently have only planned to take off work on the 17th. This would
allow me to observe on the night of the 16/17th, and of course, the 17/18th
since that's a saturday morning. I was reluctant to ask for more time off
since I'm still fairly new to my job. But I would consider pushing that
envelope if you all begin to feel you'll have a shortage of "trained"
observers. Stay in touch and let us know how "the team" shapes up. I'll play
it by ear over the course of the next week. But, of course, I would like
nothing better than to be able to join you all down there!
In addition, I would also like to offer my site as an "alternative" in
case Florida gets socked in by clouds. I'm about 150 miles north of the GA/FL
border, roughly 6 hrs from the Space center. The site is just a couple miles
off of I-16 and easily accessible. I'll be happy to provide more information
and directions if you would like to include my site as an alternative. In the
meantime, I'll put my "feelers" out at work and try to determine if extra time
off would be feasible.
