(meteorobs) Leonids in the UK 16/17 Nov 2000

Hello all,

This years Leonids turned out to be very hectic for me ! ...I had planned
to make photographic observations this year, but at the last minute i
decided to get a rotating shutter ,which i ordered from AWR Technologies
UK on the 15th Nov and franticly mounted on the 16th with only hours to spare!

The shutter worked well, and the weather forecast was all clear so i headed
north east from my home in London and ended up in a field somewhere north
of Colchester, and close to the small hamlet of Pebmarsh.

After some initial difficulty aligning the shutter and camera lens i
started my observations at 01 UTdot because i was concentrating on
photographic observations,i only counted Leonids and sporadics for each
period.Overall, activity was low, with long gaps between flurries of
usually 2 or 3 meteors in close succession.Almost all the Leonids i saw
left 1-3 sec persistent trains and the majority i saw ranged from mag 0 - -1.

The highlight came at 04.47 UT when a -5 mag multicolored Leonid fireball
tore downwards finishing just 2 or 3 degrees above the horizon (Can someone
please tell me what the magnitude would be after magnitude correction ie
what magnitude would it appear to be for someone observing a fireball of
this magnitude at Zenith).

A breakdown of the nights observing by period follows:

Period 1
01.00 UT - 02.10 UT
LEO 5
SPO 2

Period 2
02.10 UT - 03.20 UT
LEO 3

Period 3
03.20 UT - 04.15 UT
LEO 11
SPO 1

Period 4
04.15 UT - 05.20 UT
LEO 6
SPO 2

Leo
