Re: (meteorobs) Ursids

I was also wondering about outburst possibilities for the upcoming Ursids.

I was lucky enough to witness the unexpected Ursid enhancement of Dec
21/22 1988. From a suburban location and a bright Full Moon in the
sky, I watched through a window giving me LM probably no better than
4.5, obstruction close to 50%. A one hour observing period early
evening had about 10 Ursids. Most were faint but two of them were
seen flaring in and out several times on there path. Later at night
shortly before dawn, I did another period of 30 minutes and saw 5
more Ursids. This included 2 vivid green approx magn -3 fireballs and
a yellow magn -4 that flared in and out about 5 times on a straight
line! Considering how bad my observing conditions were, it seemed
like unusually good activity.

Since this year's Ursids are happening near the New Moon and a
predicted peak time that would favor north America and maybe Europe,
I would certainly keep an eye out!

Clear skies,
Pierre
