I would be rather sceptical about newspaper reports re the temperature
of meteorites etc after landing. Reports should be well documented. i.e.
time of fall, time elapsed before the meteorite was picked up, etc. A dark
crusted meteorite, even if it has landed on snow, can feel quite warm if it
has been sitting out if bright sunlight for an extended period of time
absorbing heat. Also, a meteorite may be covered by frost in the early
morning as other objects are at times. In this case, the temperature of the
meteorite would have nothing to do with the temp on impact. Such
documentation unfortunately is scarce. I would indeed be very interested in
such reports if they were well documented and factual. Unfortunately I
don't think many reports of this type exist. I wish I could be proven
wrong!
