(meteorobs) Fireballs

I hope that these fireballs which are being tossed back in forth in the
last traffic of 15 or more messages are done in a friendly spirit. In
fact I gather that you know each other. However I am reminded of an
occurrence in my life some 50 years ago.
I was driving through a residential neighborhood of Long Beach,
California. Suddenly everything lit up brighter than day light. I
immediately realized it was a very big meteor and pulled over to the
curb. When I jumped out of the car and looked up I could see the
luminous trail left by the meteor. I immediately took my pocket
notebook out and started to record the path of the meteor with respect
to the stars that I knew better than I do now. In those days you could
see stars in Long Beach.8-) I recorded the time and the street address
at my location. The next day I could hardly wait to get in touch with
the Griffith Park Planetarium and Observatory. I just knew that they
would appreciate getting such good data from such an experienced
observer. When I finally made contact, they told me to get lost in a
polite manner. They didn't want my data at all. I really felt bad. I
hope, if that ever happens to me again, that this web site will accept
my data with courtesy and appreciation. 8-)
