Thanks for the URL to this great site, Joseph! To give Jan's question a short
(re)answer: the Gegenschein is a pale, oval "blob" of light which can be seen
surrounding a point on the ecliptic (the zodiac line), immediately OPPOSITE the
Sun. Thus the Gegenschein is generally at its highest point (and best seen) at
midnight. It is generally only visible from very dark skies.
