(meteorobs) Meteor Activity Outlook for March 9-15, 2001

The moon is full on Friday March 9. This would make any meteor observing
this week a futile pursuit. The evening skies will be free from
moonlight late in the period but rates are so low at this time I would
not recommend that one try to observe meteors. The estimated total
hourly rates for evening observers this week would be near 1 for those
located in the Northern Hemisphere and 2 for those located in the
Southern Hemisphere. For morning observers the estimated total hourly
rates would be near 3 for the Northern Hemisphere and 5 for those
located in the Southern Hemisphere. These morning rates are greatly
reduced due to moonlight and assume that you are watching from rural
areas away from sources of light pollution. The actual rates will also
depend on factors such as personal motion and light perception, local
weather conditions, alertness and experience in watching for meteor
activity. The positions listed below are exact for Saturday night/Sunday
morning March 10/11. The positions do not change greatly day to day so
these positions may be used during this entire period. Details on each
shower will return next week when observing conditions are more
favorable.

Antihelion (Virginid) 12:16 (184) -02
Gamma Normids 16:24 (246) -51
Northern Apex 17:16 (259) -08
Southern Apex 17:16 (259) -38
Delta Pavonids 18:44 (281) -60

Clear Skies!
