Re: (meteorobs) Leonid maximum best US area?
Hi Nick,
If I were to travel in the U.S. looking for a place to see the Leonids I
would first consider the American Southwest. The desert often absorbs
clouds, but not always and it does rain there but usually more into the
spring so flowers come out in March or so. Specific location, perhaps land
at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and travel north to Prescott (good old
Western town, pan for gold at Lynx Creek if it isn't frozen) or down
towards Tuson and the mountains near it. I wouldn't stay at Phoenix, much
more interesting sites within four hours drive. Prescott is a mile high,
pretty little city with reasonable accommodations, or were in the late
'80s. The usual December temperature at night is about 18-22 degrees F,
cold. Check out the gold nuggets on display at the various banks and and take
it easy on Whisky Row. The motels on HWY 86, coming in from the west,
are in timber, very nice. Look out for black ice from seepage in the
morning going over the mountain on 86 toward Yarnell.
