(meteorobs) Max night Perseids strong in Hawaii (a full report)

Because of logistics, I have been tending to stay at home lately to
do my observing. However, the combination of moonlight and
weather really forced my hand this time, and I spent the night up
on the summit of Haleakala on Maui. Turned out a very good
choice. Despite occasional high clouds or summit fog, the
conditions were pretty good. The altitude really helped cut through
the moonlight yielding decent LM (mostly above 6.0) even after
moonrise. On top of that, the mid pacific was favored for the early
peak (due at 1400 UT) to occur just before morning twilight.

The results came out as would be expected - a very fine show. I
logged a total of 103 PER in 4.08hr, despite the lower radiant due
to my latitude. And, they tended to be quite bright, mean mag=
2.58, with many leaving long persistent trains. A lot of oohs and
aahs.

I observed from 0740 - 1430 UT, and the trend of ZHR is steadily
upward, with my max calculated as 141 (1400-1430UT). This is as
expected on the upswing toward the predicted peak around
1400UT. Unfortunately twilight began to interfere by 1500UT, so I
couldn't continue and verify if that 14UT slot was indeed the
absolute peak or not. Will have to wait for the worldwide results to
be tallied to find out.

Its interesting to note that they trended toward brighter meteors
too, as the ZHR approached a peak.

Note: LM reduced by periodic high clouds and summit fog. Low
radiant
elevation resulted in mostly earth grazers, impractical to calculate
ZHR based on standard simple formula.
