(meteorobs) [OT] Using a Metal Detector

OK, this isn't exactly on meteor observing in the sky, but it's about finding them on the ground.
Has anyone used a metal detector to look for meteorites? I may be off onto a desert area in Nevada
in two weeks and would like to know points relative to using one. For example, there's a lot of
magnetite out there, so maybe there are some ways to avoid it with the type of detector or settings
on the them. Maybe there's a way to set one so that nickel is more likely found than iron. There's
probably a lot of iron in those 'thar hills. Suggestions?
