I think it's indispensable to define clearly the terms "meteoroid" and
"meteor" in this thread, otherwise we can easily confuse ourselves. I'm
considering "meteoroid" every particle in a stream capable of producing
a "meteor" easily visible to the naked eye.

Personally I would consider the possibility of meteoroids in family just
in case they cause meteors within the same second or so, anywhere in the
sky, during a normal meteor shower. The higher the velocities of meteors
and/or ZHR of a given shower the shorter the time span between two or
more meteors required to consider them as possibly coming from a
recently formed family of meteoroids, as explained by Chris. Any longer
than a certain time span and the probability of being a ramdom
clustering is almost 100%.

What the experts have to do is determine statistically this time span
for every meteor shower based on their velocities, pop. index, ZHR and
other factors, so that we can collect data and analyze the clustering
phenomena.

During a meteor storm the things would become too complicated, and I
wouldn't consider anything, I would just enjoy the show.
