(meteorobs) Perseids from Hawaii (Aug 12)
I had an almost disaster last nite. I overslept and missed going up to my planned site on Mauna Kea. But some incredible (and truly incredible as anyone who knows Hilo) luck the sky was completely clear at my house!!! I observed for 2 half hour sessions from 3:23 am onward. Perseids rates seemed good. I saw the ZHR rise from about 50 to 70 as dawn approached. Average magnitude of the perseids were about 2, so quite a lot of bright ones. Therefore, the fact that my LM was somewhat diminished to 6.3 due to observing from within the city limits probably didn't affect the counts so much.
BTW, the fact you can get LM=6.3 just 3 miles from downtown Hilo is a testament to the effectiveness of the shielded low-sodium strict lighting enforcement here.
