RE: (meteorobs) Meteor Chunks Damage Homes, Light Up Night Sky

Ed,

I did not know that. It makes sense, though.

Since there is a huge distinction between the two, the press should
call it a 'meteorite' shower and NOT a meteor shower. Furthermore, I
think a responsible [read informed] reporter would take an extra
sentence to make that distinction. All of the local sources listed
on SpaceWeather.com called it a meteor shower which promises to be
confusing for the public and frustrating for us come August (or maybe
next month if the Lyrids are promoted). I did notice, however, that
CNN never called it any kind of shower.

As I said, I'm just bracing for questions from my students...

It is not unusual for a fall of several meteorites to be called a
"meteorite shower". Do a search with google for the Mocs meteorite
Pultusk
Poland is another example of multiple falls, also called a "shower"
in
professional texts and journals.
