[Amateur David W Bishop writes:]
It appears that this supernova is actually a Hypernova, a very rare and
very bright sub-class of supernova. These can be 100x as bright as a
regular supernova type Ia, and some of them have been GRB candidates.
It is currently mag 12.9 and rising. Maximum brightness is expected
sometime around February 18th.
I have a web page which tracks supernova, specifically
you can find the latest on this one at:
http://www.RochesterAstronomy.org/supernova.html#2002ap
I've put together a sub-page on this supernova.

I'm collecting images, so if you have one, please drop me a URL.
