Description:
An easy hop from Zeta Hya in the "head circlet" of Hydra
via a pretty pair of orange stars mags 6 and 7 just over
the border in Cancer, ngc2775 was best seen at 70x with-
out the DeepSky filter. At 210x and 360x however, the DS
filter definitely added some contrast, showing the galaxy
as growing gradually much brighter toward the middle. It
also brought out an elongated halo extending about 4'
end to end, tilted NNW. On the other hand, the galaxy's
brighter core, which showed best at 210x without filter,
was diffuse, 1' long, and elongated obliquely N-S (PA 0o).
A 2' dark lane or mottling was observed E and N of the
core. This last feature was not visible on the POSS plate,
which in fact shows this object as a likely E3-4 elliptical
galaxy, rather than an Sa spiral as cataloged! No stellar
nucleus could be found even at 360x.
