Description:
Within M42, Trapezium stars A, B, C, D, orange E, and F are clearly
visible. The nebula more than fills the 56' field-of-view. The central
area around the Trapezium is mottled and greenish-grey. The "fish
mouth" dark area is east of the Trapezium and extends nearly to it. A
dim star is found just outside the north edge of this dark
penninsula. A "V" of 5 stars is found SE of the Trapezium with the
north arm brighter. The north arm of the V marks a sharp drop in
brightness of the nebula. The bright area bordering the north arm of
the V forks at the point of the V with the longer arm curving sharply
to the south and the other arm going in a more easterly direction.
West of the Trapezium, the nebula fans out broadly for about one-half
degree. The area between the west fan and the curving arm is faintly
filled with nebulosity.
