Description:
I viewed this excellent galaxy during the 1996 Texas Star Party with Larry
Mitchell's 36" Dobsonian. It was bright, very large, much elongated in
a Position Angle of 20 degrees. The central section is much brighter than
the arms and it is also elongated in the same PA as the galaxy. The
arms are obvious and one spiral arm is on the south side and two are on
the north side of this lovely galaxy. At this high power the galaxy is
most of the field of view and the arms contain two bright knots, both to
the north of the core. One is where the northern spiral arm bends and
the other nearer to the core. The entire galaxy is mottled and that
mottling is more prominent with averted vision. I have always thought
this to be the best of the Non-Messier galaxies in the Northern Sky,
this observation confirms that belief.
