(IAAC) IC 2003 - 24.4" F/15

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Object: IC 2003 (PK 161-14.1; PN G161.2-14.8; ARO 76)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: PER
Object data: Vmag=11.4; Bmag=12.6; 7"x6" (21"x19" in IDB); type II; central
star of Vmag=15.3; discovered by Espin before 1908; ELCAT: [OIII,
496+501nm] = 15 x [Hbeta, 486nm].
RA/DE: 03h56.37m, +33°52.5' (2000)
Date and UT of observation: 31 July 1992, morning
Location & latitude: Chatea-Renard Obs. (France, latN44 39, longE06 28)
Site classification: mountain peak, alt.2950m (8900ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.3 with averted vision
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 3
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Cassegrain 24.4"/620mm F/15
Magnification: 390-650x
Filters used: none

Description: at 390x, very similar to nearby IC 351, maybe a little
brighter, quite stellar; very near a fainter star of mag13 at 15" towards
PA250d; at 650x, the nebula is 8"x7", egg-shaped with great axis pointing
PA15d; a brighter crescent zone is visible on the SE quadrant with a
stellar knot in its middle (of mag13.5-14.0) at 2" in PA185d from the
geometric center (central star ?).

I can provide a scanned drawing of IC 2003 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works quite often with other
configurations...
