(IAAC) IC 5117 - 8" F/10

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Object: IC 5117 (PK 089-05.1; PN G089.8-05.1; ARO 112)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: Cyg
Object data: Vmag=11.5; Bmag=13.3; 6"x6"; type I+II; central star of
Vmag=17.2 (HD 205211, Bmag: 18.3); discovered by Fleming in 1905; ELCAT:
[OIII, 496+501nm] = 23 x [Hbeta, 486nm].
RA/DE: 21h32m31s, +44°35.8' (2000.0)
Date and UT of observation: 16 August 1993
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): -
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 2
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 3
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Meade SCT 8" (203mm), F/10
Magnification: 80-310x
Filters used: prism, OIII

Description: at 80x with prism, hard to locate because of a mag10 star 28"
to the NE whose bright continous spectrum is eclipsing the faint stellar
dot of the planetary; à 312x, the PN offers a very good contrast gain with
the OIII filter, well seen by comparison with the mag10 star (it helps in
this case:-); quite stellar even at this power; a mag13 star at 40" nearly
N forms a triangle with the PN and the mag10 star.

Note: see the enormous difference of the OIII/Hbeta ratio in ELCAT data,
compared to other PNs (usually the ratio is between 7 and 15).

I can provide a scanned drawing of IC 5117 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for I Mac); just mail me to try
(ypothier@abi.snv.jussieu.fr), it works quite often with other
configurations...
