(IAAC) IC 5217 - 17.5" F/4.5

Observer: Yann POTHIER (France)
Your skill: advanced (many years)
Object: IC 5217 (PK 100-05.1; PN G100.6-05.4; ARO 85)
Category: planetary nebula
Constellation: LAC
Object data: Vmag=11.3; Bmag=12.6; 8"x6"; type II; central star of
Vmag=15.4 (Bmag: 14.6); discovered by Fleming in 1904; ELCAT: [OIII,
496+501nm] = 16 x [Hbeta, 486nm].
RA/DE: 22h23m55s, +50°58.0' (2000.0)
Date and UT of observation: 29 July 2003, 01h15 UT
Location & latitude: La Clapiere Obs. (France, latN44 40 00, longE06 27 36)
Site classification: rural, alt.1650m (5500ft)
Limiting magnitude (visual in UMi): 6.34 (25% of the observing time
with averted vision)
Transparency (1 to 5 - best to worst): 1.5
Seeing (1 to 5 - best to worst): 2.5
Altitude of object above horizon: 83°
Moon up (phase?): no
Instrument: Coulter 445mm/17.5" F/4.5
Magnification: 211x, 400x
Filters used: Wr65A, UHC, OIII, Hbeta

Description: at 211x and 400x with OIII filter, stellar at low
powers, small and bright nebula at 400x, round with sharp edges,
quite homogeneous, about 6" in diameter; Wratten 65A (green) filter
provides a small contrast gain, UHC a good one, OIII a very good one
and Hbeta is of no use (although there is still a residual PN image);
the PN is about 11th mag.

I can provide a scanned drawing of IC 5217 to anyone who can read the
binhex encoding of Eudora (for Mac); just mail me to try
(yann.pothier@fnac.net), it works quite often with other
configurations...
