(meteorobs) Perseid Obs. Aug. 11-12

Observed from White River Canyon near Mt. Hood, Oregon, USA.
Lat: 45N18'11" Long: 121W39'17"

Very nice display; observed rates were about half of what I saw in 1994
when we got the outburst on the West Coast. Sky conditions were
more variable than the previous night, and the air was a bit moist.
Still, it was a very good night, as evidenced by the obvious presence of
the zodiacal band just before twilight, stretching from the Tau-Gem
border where it met the zodiacal light all the way to Aquarius.

I saw no extremely bright Perseids this year, in contrast to 1993 and
1994. The best was a -3 (although this might be a dim estimate due to
extinction) that ended in a terminal burst and had a train that was
partially red.

(By the way, np=non-Perseid; I didn't keep track of other showers
although I did note a -1 alpha Cap. M is mean magnitude, not corrected
for limiting magnitude.)
